Workshops Taught

Words & Images: Creative Writing & Instagram  |  Instagram offers a way to combine words and images into a new kind of creative experience: think beyond Instapoetry…. We’ll explore some of the different ways creative writers use this unique platform, and talk approaches and tools for creating a successful and engaging account. Bring along your ideas and smartphone. No prior writing experience is required. Please note: this session focuses on Instagram as a creative (rather than a marketing) platform. The focus is on creative writing and image-making.

Blackouts & Cutups  | Sources for poetry are all around us: newspaper articles, scientific and law journals, junk mail, comments sections…. In Blackouts & Cutups, we explore two forms of found poetry: erasures and centos. Erasures (or blackouts) take existing text and redact, overlay, or obscure it to create new work. Centos (Latin for “patchwork”) are collage poems made up of phrases or lines taken from other sources. No prior writing experience required: amateurs and beginners welcome!

Playing with Poetry Forms  |  You might know your sonnets from sestinas, but did you know there’s a poetry form based on the Fibonacci sequence? Ever heard of a lune? Experiment with new and old forms of poetry in this beginner’s workshop that focuses on ways in which writing in form can help to free your creativity! No prior writing experience required: amateurs and beginners welcome!
